April 29, 2013

Mi familia,                                                                                                             April 29, 2013

Thanks for all your prayers in behalf of our investigators.  Miguel Villarreal and his family are all well and were able to attend church this past week. It was really new for them and so I'm not too sure how much they liked it. The ward was really nice to them and so they received wonderful fellowship. Another family that we found was the Robles Family. It consists of Francesca (mother), Stephanie (17, Daughter), Emily (11, Daughter) and Rodolfo (9, Son). They are an awesome family that came to church and absolutely loved it. The only problem for them is that the oldest daughter Stephanie cannot speak any Spanish  The rest of the family speaks only Spanish so I have no idea how that works. So church is kinda hard for her. It's lame because I have to follow her around and translate. I was so exhausted after Spanish Branch. Anyways they are awesome and are getting baptized on the 26th of May.

This week we had some crazy lightning and rainstorms. Saturday night we were teaching the Villarreal family and out of nowhere this giant rainstorm hits us. We finished the lesson and then we all went and played soccer outside in the rain with them. So legit. I've never seen so much lightning before it was awesome  On the ride home a lightning bolt struck a building on the side of the road right next to us. Everything went white and my ears were ringing.  haha that was pretty exhilarating. The building that was struck was a Catholic church and luckily the blinding downpour extinguished the flames. Haha it was funny how many people took that as a sign that God was angry with what's been going on with the Pope and what not. Sunday after church we spent the rest of the day cleaning up the damage from the storm. The Cabello family in our area had 3 of their palm trees struck and burnt down. There were several car crashes due to the weather but no one was hurt so all was well.

Something that I came across in my studies was that of the tragic story of Alma 3. In this chapter tens of thousands of Lamanites and Nephites are killed in battle. At the end of the chapter the Prophet Mormon comments:
26 And in one year were thousands and tens of thousands of souls sent to the eternal world, that they might reap their rewards according to their works, whether they were good or whether they were bad, to reap eternal happiness or eternal misery, according to the spirit which they listed to obey, whether it be a good spirit or a bad one.
27 For every man receiveth wages of him whom he listeth to obey, and this according to the words of the spirit of prophecy; therefore let it be according to the truth.

In life we ultimately have two choices of who we "listeth to obey"...the Savior or the Devil. Sometimes when temptation or difficult decisions arise it is easy to forget that this choice might allow us to "reap eternal happiness or eternal misery." Something Elder Wilding and I have implemented into our teaching is teaching our investigators, less-actives, and even members that every man will receive the wages of  whom we choose to follow. The same is for us. Do our simple choices and actions allow us to receive the wonderful promised blessing of our Savior? Or do we, like the Lamanites of old and "come out in open rebellion against God" (Alma 3: 18) We cannot have both,  for the Savior taught us, "no man can serve two masters" (Mathew 6:24)

I love you all and thank you for all your endless prayers. Que Dios les Bendgas!
