Sanderson Family,                                                                                   05/20/2013

This week was a test of faith as we prepared the Robles family for their baptisms this coming Sunday. Hermana Francisca is still really nervous and apprehensive about entering into this covenant  She already lives all the commandments and even paid her tithing this past week.  But for some reason she still wont commit to be baptized this Sunday. Members have been  helping us out a lot by helping us resolve her doubt. She came to the baptismal service this past Sunday and loved it so much. We thought for sure that would resolve any problems. We had her interviewed to see if there might be a flaw in our teaching and she passed with flying colors. After the interview I went on splits with Hermano Orozco to her house. We taught about revelation through prayer and had her kneel in prayer and asked God if she was ready to be baptized. Right as the words fell from her lips the Spirit filled the room. Francisca even admitted that she felt it..but still is nervous. So heartbreaking when people deny spiritual experiences like that.

I have been thinking a lot about dear Francisca and what could possibly be missing in her conversion. Something that I feel we all might lack but I believe is stopping her is faith. She like many of us lack faith. She is afraid of falling into sin after her baptism...a common doubt from almost every investigator. A cool scripture that I found during my personal study about the changing power of baptism is in Ezekiel 11: 19-20  we read: "And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart  of flesh. That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances:  and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God."
This is the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. It changes us as well as out desire, but only if we allow it to. Through our faith we can bring to pass many miracles...in others and in ourselves. Please keep this dear sister in your prayers. I know the Lord will provide the way for this woman to be baptized this Sunday.

Sanderson Family,

Feliz Dia De Madre! muchicimos gracias mama por su ejemplo y apoyo :) haha so wonderful to talk to you all yesterday. Hope you enjoyed it as well. Since there really isn't much to say I want to send you this cool editorial the church news just produced about how the Lord is hastening his work. Disfriuten!

“Speed seems to be the order of the day, whether in athletics, business, communication or a host of other endeavors. The world seems gripped by a sense of urgency.

Where the gospel is concerned, calm reflection and quiet pondering act as a respite from the busy world and invite the Spirit to instruct and uplift. However, there is a gospel sense of urgency, as well, that has existed in each dispensation.

The scriptures are filled with examples of righteous people moving with haste. When Abraham saw three messengers sent from the Lord, "he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground" (Genesis 18:2). He did not meander or saunter, he ran.

When David faced the seemingly impossible task of confronting the giant Goliath, he demonstrated his faith by hurrying to the task. "David hasted and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine" (1 Samuel 17:48).

When angels visited shepherds in a field near Bethlehem and told them the Savior was born, the scripture says "And they came with haste..." (Luke 2:16). Years later, when Mary Magdalene discovered the empty tomb, she ran to tell two of the apostles about the Resurrection. They, in turn, "ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre" (John 20:4).

The Book of Mormon describes how Alma performed difficult missionary duties in the city of Ammonihah. The people there "reviled him, and spit upon him, and caused that he should be cast out of their city" (Alma 8:13). But as he left, "being weighed down with sorrow, wading through much tribulation and anguish of soul" an angel appeared to him and told him to return and preach again.

Alma then "returned speedily to the land of Ammonihah" (Alma 8:18). Again, he didn't dawdle or take time to think about it or question the assignment. He obeyed the Lord with haste.

Elder Robert B. Harbertson, who was a member of the Seventy, said of Alma's speed, "I believe he was motivated by love for the Lord and his desire to be obedient" (October 1984 general conference).

Obedience to the Lord requires immediate action. Just as the child who assures a parent he will obey "in just a minute," a disciple who hesitates can miss opportunities and delay blessings for other people.

To be sure, members of the Church are not in a race with each other to accomplish tasks. It is still true that "the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong" (Ecclesiastes 9:11).

However, where obedience, righteousness and service are concerned, everyone should make haste.”

Los amo mucho!

Sanderson Family,                                                                              05/06/2013

Crazy that another week has already flown by and I get to write to you all again! Hope everything is awesome at home and things are going smooth. I am super jealous though of the snow you have been receiving  Here in Laredo its been up in the 100s most of the time.

So a little update on some of our investigators getting baptized this month. The Robles Family (Francisca, Stephanie, Emily, and Rudulfo) came to church this weekend and loved testimony meeting. Francisca is super emotional and so I don't think here eyes were dry for the entire 3 hours. The family has caught the flame of testimony and are progressing well towards their baptism. We are trying to move their date up to the 19th but that's still undecided. The rest of the family is actively involved in mutual and other church auxiliaries. Que Padre!

The Villarreal family is still doing great but not progressing nearly as quickly as we would have hoped. Problems with the drug cartels have re-surfaced and so having lessons with them is still very difficult. Saturday night someone threw rocks through their windows and so they spent the night in the police station for safety. President Trayner has asked that we stay away for a few days. We have been reading the Book of Mormon with them over a secure telephone line and so that has been wonderful. Miguel has such great desires for his family. They have been through a lot and they so desperately need the Restored Gospel. They love the Book of Mormon and the peace it brings to their lives. This experience has really brought to life the scripture, "the pleasing word of God...the word which healeth the wounded soul." (Jacob 2: 8)

This week we combined with the Corpus Christi and Sinton Zones to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. After the dinner Elder Sanchez (my zone leader) and I gave a training. He did his part and then I was asked to give a brief explanation of what this holiday was and then tried to tie it into missionary work. I think the information is accurate, haha I just asked members and this is what they told me. aqui esta

Today is Cinco de Mayo!  Some erroneously believe that this date is the Mexican Independence Day, but that is incorrect (Sept. 16).  For our Mexican brothers and sisters, Cinco de Mayo remembers the unlikely story of the outmanned and under armed victory of the Mexican army in 1862 over the vastly superior French forces that controlled the city of Puebla in south central Mexico. The victory represented a significant morale boost to the Mexican army and the Mexican people.  The battle at Puebla established a much-needed sense of national unity and patriotism.  The French, however, did not give up.  The French had not lost a battle in nearly fifty years.  While future battles over a period of the next five years would determine the future of Mexico against the occupying French troops, the battle on May 5, 1862 prepared the hearts and minds of the Mexican people to win.

We as missionaries can find ourselves sometimes in a battle against what seems to be a superior force.  It takes us days, sometimes week, to find a great investigator to teach.  Seemingly within minutes of our great discovery, the forces of the adversary are at work.  They soon discover our treasured and much loved investigator.  Anti-Mormon literature and internet postings, family pressure, doubts, and temptations seem to find their way to our precious lambs within moments of leaving them.  These tender lambs, whose knowledge and testimonies are so fragile, are attacked from all fronts by the adversary.  Many, unfortunately, do not survive.  Our hearts break as we observe fulfillment of Alma’s statement that “wickedness never was happiness” (Alma 41:10.)

As we witness the after effects of the adversary’s efforts, we may at times think that our battle is too hard and our chances for victory too small.  We too, then begin to fill the buffetings of the adversary.  If he can “break” our spirits and determination, he wins.   We must not let this happen.

One hundred fifty one years ago today on the hills surrounding the city of Puebla, an army of men and women stood on the battlefield.  That day the future of a great nation would be determined.  That future was determined first in the minds and hearts of those who stood to do battle against seemingly overwhelming odds.

In similar fashion, we too must realize that so very much is at stake each day in the battles we wage as the army of God in South Texas.  Unlike, the tiny Mexican army that assembled that day, we stand nearly 70,000 strong throughout the world.  Our ranks are ever increasing in this the greatest season ever for missionary work.  We have been called by The King of King and Lord of Lords, even the Prince of Peace, to battle for the hearts and minds of our brothers and sisters.  It is something we covenanted to do before the foundation of the earth.  We have done it before and exhibited “exceeding faith and good works” (see Alma 13:1-5).  In truth, in this latter-day battle, we are never outmanned nor under armed.  God has promised us that we will never be outmanned nor under armed in this the greatest battle that has ever been waged.  The promises of God are true.

We then ended the night with some hispanic dancing and some music. It was a lot of fun!

Ok mom this friday I will call you and set up a time with you Sunday night of when I will call you. Expect the call on Friday to be around 9. Thanks again for all you do! Feliz dia de madre mi mama!

Mi familia,                                                                                                             April 29, 2013

Thanks for all your prayers in behalf of our investigators.  Miguel Villarreal and his family are all well and were able to attend church this past week. It was really new for them and so I'm not too sure how much they liked it. The ward was really nice to them and so they received wonderful fellowship. Another family that we found was the Robles Family. It consists of Francesca (mother), Stephanie (17, Daughter), Emily (11, Daughter) and Rodolfo (9, Son). They are an awesome family that came to church and absolutely loved it. The only problem for them is that the oldest daughter Stephanie cannot speak any Spanish  The rest of the family speaks only Spanish so I have no idea how that works. So church is kinda hard for her. It's lame because I have to follow her around and translate. I was so exhausted after Spanish Branch. Anyways they are awesome and are getting baptized on the 26th of May.

This week we had some crazy lightning and rainstorms. Saturday night we were teaching the Villarreal family and out of nowhere this giant rainstorm hits us. We finished the lesson and then we all went and played soccer outside in the rain with them. So legit. I've never seen so much lightning before it was awesome  On the ride home a lightning bolt struck a building on the side of the road right next to us. Everything went white and my ears were ringing.  haha that was pretty exhilarating. The building that was struck was a Catholic church and luckily the blinding downpour extinguished the flames. Haha it was funny how many people took that as a sign that God was angry with what's been going on with the Pope and what not. Sunday after church we spent the rest of the day cleaning up the damage from the storm. The Cabello family in our area had 3 of their palm trees struck and burnt down. There were several car crashes due to the weather but no one was hurt so all was well.

Something that I came across in my studies was that of the tragic story of Alma 3. In this chapter tens of thousands of Lamanites and Nephites are killed in battle. At the end of the chapter the Prophet Mormon comments:
26 And in one year were thousands and tens of thousands of souls sent to the eternal world, that they might reap their rewards according to their works, whether they were good or whether they were bad, to reap eternal happiness or eternal misery, according to the spirit which they listed to obey, whether it be a good spirit or a bad one.
27 For every man receiveth wages of him whom he listeth to obey, and this according to the words of the spirit of prophecy; therefore let it be according to the truth.

In life we ultimately have two choices of who we "listeth to obey"...the Savior or the Devil. Sometimes when temptation or difficult decisions arise it is easy to forget that this choice might allow us to "reap eternal happiness or eternal misery." Something Elder Wilding and I have implemented into our teaching is teaching our investigators, less-actives, and even members that every man will receive the wages of  whom we choose to follow. The same is for us. Do our simple choices and actions allow us to receive the wonderful promised blessing of our Savior? Or do we, like the Lamanites of old and "come out in open rebellion against God" (Alma 3: 18) We cannot have both,  for the Savior taught us, "no man can serve two masters" (Mathew 6:24)

I love you all and thank you for all your endless prayers. Que Dios les Bendgas!

Sanderson Family,                                                                                                    4/22/2013

Another great week has passed here in the arid desert of Laredo,Texas. Haha we got news last week and turns out that I am going to stay here another transfer with Elder Wilding! So stoked!  He is an awesome companion and we will do awesome things this coming transfer.

This week we found 2 awesome families that are so prepared to act upon this wonderful gospel message. They both have the same last name, the Villarreals. They are wonderful people and so willing to put their faith into action. One of them we found this Thursday while looking for a former investigator. We knocked on the door and the father (Miguel) let us right in before we could say anything. It’s a family of 7, 4 of which are baptismal age. They all eagerly accepted the baptismal date for the 19th of May. The other family was a referral from a recent convert from the San Isidro sisters. They had already been taught by missionaries before and wanted to come closer through Christ. We simply taught that baptism was the way, so they also accepted to be baptized on the 19th of May. I need you to keep Miguel's family in your prayers though. They are in a pretty crazy situation. Miguel drives semis for a living and this last Saturday he was hauling a shipment and turns out there were drugs in it. He called the authorities and they took care of everything. The only problem is that the drugs were being smuggled by a Cartel called the "Zetas". They are CRAZY people and so you don't want to mess with them. So they found out that their shipment went wrong and are now looking for him. So he and his family are in hiding right now so please pray for their safety :)

This week was also interviews with President Trayner. What an awesome man and such an example for me. We talked about the district and how we could improve. He then asked me to speak with him this Sunday to the Spanish branch here. They have been struggling with their missionary work for some time now and so President and a few other missionaries throughout the meeting block were assigned to speak on the importance of missionary work. I was assigned to speak in Sacrament meeting on the commandment to be actively involved. Here are some points of my talk that I wish to share with you today.

I love the quote by Spencer W. Kimball when he says, "One must live, not only exist; he must do, not merely be; he must grow, not just vegetate". At times as members of this Restored Church we sometimes develop the mentality as if we can just vegetate or sit here, refrain from doing evil, and expect blessings from our Heavenly Father. It is not so. President Kimball states, " to break our sacred covenants we have already made, one only needs to do nothing."  We have all been enlisted...but for what, and for how long? A few conferences ago Elder Holland taught us that an encounter with the Savior marks the beginning of a Christ-like life, not the end of it. We must be actively involved in this work along side the Lord of the Vineyard. This work stretches on into the eternities and we must be a part of it. All excuses of why we can't participate or help are irrelevant.

President Uchtdorf taught us, "We certainly cannot do this with a dragging-our-feet, staring-at-our-watch, complaining-as-we-go approach to discipleship.  When it comes to living the gospel, we should not be like the boy who dipped his toe in the water and then claimed he went swimming. As sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father, we are capable of so much more. For that, good intentions are not enough. We must do. Even more important, we must become what Heavenly Father wants us to be."  God has endowed us all with talents and time, with abilities and with opportunities to develop them in His service. He therefore expects much of us.

In the Book of Mormon, Ammon describes what he and his companions experienced:

3 Behold, I answer for you; for our brethren, the Lamanites, were in darkness, yea, even in the darkest abyss, but behold, how many of them are brought to behold the marvelous light of God! And this is the blessing which hath been bestowed upon us, that we have been made instruments in the hands of God to bring about this great work.

4 Behold, thousands of them do rejoice, and have been brought into the fold of God.

5 Behold, the field was ripe, and blessed are ye, for ye did thrust in the sickle, and did reap with your might, yea, all the day long did ye labor; and behold the number of your sheaves! And they shall be gathered into the garners [temples--according to Elder Maxwell], that they are not wasted.

6 Yea, they shall not be beaten down by the storm at the last day; yea, neither shall they be harrowed up by the whirlwinds; but when the storm cometh they shall be gathered together in their place, that the storm cannot penetrate to them; yea, neither shall they be driven with fierce winds whithersoever the enemy listeth to carry them.

7 But behold, they are in the hands of the Lord of the harvest, and they are his; and he will raise them up at the last day.

22 Yea, [the member missionary] that repenteth and exerciseth faith, and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually without ceasing. . . it shall be given unto such to bring thousands of souls to repentance, even as it has been given unto us to bring these our brethren to repentance.

23 Now do ye remember, my brethren, that we said unto our brethren. . . , we go up to the land of [Laredo], to preach unto our brethren, . . . , and they laughed us to scorn?  (Alma 26:3-7, 22-23)

The harvest was plentiful for Ammon and his companion.  We live in such a day. Let us then follow the mandate from our Savior to the Brother of Jared and "Go to Work" (Ether 2:16) This is a marvelous work and a wonder, and we cannot just simply be bystanders as this work moves forward.
